Citizen Scientists

Description:

Volunteer citizen scientists contribute valuable information for many Conservation Department projects. There are many different surveys for volunteers with varying abilities and time commitments. Whether it’s watching in your own backyard on the Backyard Winter Bird Survey or helping spot eagles on Great Bay in the Winter Bald Eagle Survey, surveying for Rusty Blackbirds in Pittsburg or recording information on your local Bank Swallow colony, there are many opportunities to help.

Time Commitment:

We request a commitment of 4 hours per week for the duration of the season. This structured time commitment allows for meaningful engagement with research projects and ensures continuity and reliability in data collection efforts. Whether you're available for morning surveys, afternoon monitoring, or evening observations, there's a volunteer opportunity to fit your schedule and preferences.

Volunteer Benefits:
  • Hands-On Learning: Gain practical experience in scientific research and data collection techniques under the guidance of experienced professionals.
  • Environmental Education: Deepen your understanding of local ecosystems, biodiversity, and conservation principles through engaging fieldwork.
  • Community Engagement: Connect with fellow nature enthusiasts and scientists, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose.
  • Personal Growth: Develop valuable skills in observation, data analysis, and problem-solving while contributing to a cause you're passionate about.
  • Contribution to Science: Your observations and data will directly contribute to ongoing research projects and conservation efforts, making a real difference in protecting our natural world.

Most volunteers find it a rewarding experience and remain in their positions for many years.
